Here are some Apprenticeship and Job Opportunities...

Urban Farm Training Program @ HSPS Youth Farm
The program is designed to be a holistic educational experience for those interested in agriculture, food justice, and nutrition. (That said, people interested in physical education, sociology, education, or myriad other topics could benefit from this apprenticeship). The Youth farm provides a unique opportunity to work with youth while still working on a production farm. At the Youth Farm, we view the time spent doing hands-on farm work as the most important component of learning about horticulture/urban agriculture.

Program Components:
* Hands-on farm work
* Technical Workshops
* Farm walks
* Weekly farm meetings
* Rotations
* Direct marketing
* Working with youth
* NYC C.R.A.F.T.
* Discussions on food justice

Just Food: Just Food believes that a just, local, sustainable food system is essential for New York City to thrive. We envision a future where there’s a CSA on every block, urban farms are as common as skyscrapers, and fresh food is universally accessible. Since 1995, Just Food has connected local residents, farms, and organizations with the resources and support they need to grow, cook, and find good food. We’re working with communities to implement change, raise awareness and inspire action.

Background: Just Food is seeking an intern for our City Farms Market Network, a group of community-run farmers markets that are closely linked to community gardens or urban farms, and are started by members of low-income communities who want to bring fresh, affordable food to their neighborhoods. Just Food supports the work of City Farms Market Network members through trainings and materials, information sharing and technical assistance, market and vendor insurance, cooking demonstrations and networking opportunities. Intern Responsibilities:
  • Assist Just Food staff in conducting our 2012 market training program
  • Update and create materials for Just Food’s market training program, toolkit and website
  • Work with Just Food staff and City Farms Markets to organize two workshops for network members that advance information and skills sharing between market managers
  • Create outreach materials and opportunities to promote the City Farms Markets

Qualifications:
·         Enthusiastic about community-driven solutions to food and farming issues
·         Strong interpersonal and communication skills
·         Strong writing, editing, research, and organizational skills
·         Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively
·         Proficient computer and photo skills
·         Experience working with farmers markets or community food projects a plus

Timeframe:
  • Three month commitment is required, starting the week of February 6 or 13, 2012
  • Approximately 10 hours per week

Compensation:
  • Unpaid; if student, college credit may be available through your university
  • Opportunity to gain new skills, such as meeting facilitation and resource development skills
  • Opportunity to work with non-profit focused on community-driven approach to food justice and to build professional network

This position reports to Nadia Johnson, City Farms Market Network Coordinator. To apply, please submit a resume and a brief cover letter describing your interest in the internship by 5pm on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 to: nadia@justfood.org with the subject line “City Farms Market Network Internship”.
